The process of relocating can be stressful, as it involves major changes in your life and that of your family.
Therefore, we have listed several things to consider when planning your move.

BASIC GUIDELINES:

  • Label each box with your name and job reference number.
  • Use sturdy boxes, preferably those provided by your mover. When packing breakables, leave a 2-4 inch layer of crumpled paper at the bottom, sides, and top of the box.
  • When packing a box, place heavier items on the bottom, and the less heavy and lightest on top.

CHINA AND GLASSWARE:

Use China/Dish Boxes and unprinted newspapers.

  • Plates and saucers: Wrap each piece separately in unprinted newspaper. Place them in the box standing on the edge in the box.
  • Bowls: wrap individually, stack 4-2 together, wrap all again and place them standing on the edge in the box.
  • Cups and Glassware: Wrap cup handles in paper, then wrap the entire cup. Place them in the box with all handles pointing in the same direction. Wrap everyday glasses individually.
  • Stemware: Use white packing paper. Use China/Dish or Liquor Box with dividers. Wrap each glass individually and stand on the rim of the box.

OTHER ITEMS:

  • Books: pack books standing on the bottom edge in Book Boxes.
  • Clothing: Wardrobe Boxes can be used for handling clothing. Other clothing, blankets, and linens can be folded and packed in Linen Boxes. We recommend emptying all dressers and chests as the added weight can make them difficult to move and susceptible to damage.
  • Pots and Pans: Use China/Dish Boxes; stack them together with a few pieces of paper in between them. Fill all empty spaces with newspaper.
  • Lamps and Lampshades: Remove shades and bulbs. Wrap lamps in layers of paper and place them in a box on the base. Wrap lampshades lightly in paper, nest one inside the other, and pack in a separate box.
  • Electronic Equipment: Wrap these items heavily in bubble wrap and place them in a box (ideally in the original boxes). Place bubble wrap at the bottom and sides to prevent movement.
  • Paintings, Mirrors, and Glass: Use picture boxes and bubble wrap. Valuable pieces may need to be professionally crated by us.

THE ULTIMATE PACKING GUIDE FOR YOUR MOVE

Moving can be a daunting process, but with the right packing strategies, it doesn’t have to be. Follow this comprehensive guide to pack your belongings safely and efficiently for a stress-free move.

1. Start Early

Begin packing as soon as your move is confirmed. Start with items you use the least, such as seasonal clothing, holiday decorations, and seldom-used kitchen gadgets.

2. Gather Supplies

Stock up on high-quality packing materials to protect your belongings:

  • Sturdy moving boxes (various sizes)

  • Packing tape

  • Bubble wrap

  • Packing paper or newspaper

  • Labels or markers

  • Furniture blankets

  • Plastic wrap (for securing drawers and furniture)

3. Declutter First

Sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. Moving is the perfect opportunity to minimize clutter and save space.

4. Pack Room by Room

To stay organized, pack one room at a time. Label each box with its contents and destination (e.g., “Kitchen – Pots and Pans”). This will simplify unpacking at your new home.

5. Use the Right Techniques
  • Heavy items in small boxes: Avoid overloading large boxes with heavy items like books or tools.

  • Wrap fragile items: Use bubble wrap or packing paper to protect dishes, glassware, and electronics. Mark these boxes as “FRAGILE.”

  • Seal boxes securely: Use packing tape on all seams and edges to reinforce boxes.

  • Utilize space: Fill empty spaces in boxes with packing paper or towels to prevent shifting during transport.

6. Pack an Essentials Box

Set aside a box with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival, such as:

  • Toiletries

  • Change of clothes

  • Snacks

  • Important documents

  • Chargers for electronic devices

7. Protect Your Furniture

Disassemble large furniture where possible. Use furniture blankets and plastic wrap to protect surfaces from scratches and damage.

8. Label Clearly

Use markers or labels to clearly indicate the contents of each box and the room it belongs to. If possible, color-code your boxes by room.

9. Pack Valuables Separately

Keep valuable items, such as jewelry, important documents, and family heirlooms, with you during the move. Avoid packing them with regular household goods.

10. Follow Special Guidelines for International Moves

If you’re moving internationally, research customs regulations for your destination country. Some items may be restricted or require special documentation.

Bonus Tips:
  • Don’t leave empty spaces in boxes: Use packing paper or towels to fill gaps.

  • Take photos of complex setups: Snap photos of electronics or furniture setups to make reassembly easier.

  • Use original packaging: If you still have the original boxes for items like TVs or electronics, use them for the best fit and protection.
